The Pedestrian - Comic Review
The most bizarre, Lycra-clad, racewalking, law-abiding superhero you’ll ever meet.

In the years of my early-fatherhood-comic-lost-years I am slowly discovering I lost a massive amount of amazing stories getting published. One of those stories you’ll probably already know. Published by Magma Comix (which I also missed their formation and I will come back to them soon with another post), in August, 2024, “The Pedestrian” is one of the most quirky, humorous, and honestly a story that really captivated me straight from the most bizarre preview video I’ve seen in quite a while.
If you don’t believe me here it is.
Joey Esposito, known for his work on Batman: Urban Legends, delivers a delightfully offbeat tale in The Pedestrian. The narrative centers around a silent, Lycra-clad hero who protects the citizens of Summer City against cosmic chaos intertwined with the enigmatic history of street signs. Blending elements of superhero inversion, civic responsibility, and Lynchian surrealism, Esposito crafts a story that is both whimsical and thought-provoking. The unique concept, rooted in traffic safety and silent heroism, is a fresh take that challenges traditional superhero narratives.
The story's pacing effectively alternates between moments of absurd humor and genuine tension, keeping the reader engaged throughout. The blend of cosmic stakes with mundane pedestrian problems results in a narrative that is as entertaining as it is original.
Art
Sean Von Gorman’s art is a perfect match for Esposito’s quirky vision. His clean, dynamic linework and playful designs bring the strange and surreal world of The Pedestrian to life. From the reflective white costume of the titular hero to the atmospheric streets of Summer City, Von Gorman captures a sense of wonder and absurdity that complements the story’s tone.
The use of vibrant colors and striking visual contrasts enhances the storytelling, making even the simplest scenes visually captivating. The panels flow seamlessly, and the character expressions effectively convey the story's emotional beats, from humor to suspense.
Conclusion
The Pedestrian stands out as a remarkable indie comic that defies expectations and showcases the creative synergy of Esposito and Von Gorman. With its innovative premise, sharp writing, and stellar artwork, it’s a must-read for fans of unconventional superhero stories. Whether you’re intrigued by the idea of a silent guardian or drawn to its Lynchian undertones, The Pedestrian is a comic that deserves a spot on your shelf.
A triumphant blend of imagination and execution, The Pedestrian strides confidently into the realm of indie greatness.
